As healthcare rapidly evolves, technology has become vital for improving patient outcomes and optimizing the overall healthcare experience. As a director of patient experience within the RWJBarnabas Health System, I have seen firsthand how technology has not only improved the way we deliver care, but also empowered our patients and staff to foster more meaningful connections and achieve better health outcomes. With facilities across New Jersey, RWJBarnabas Health is the largest academic healthcare system in the state, partnering with Rutgers University to advance patient care through innovation. Our commitment to quality care is reflected in our journey as a higher reliability organization (HRO), where we aim to eliminate patient harm through evidence-based practices and continuous improvement.

Since beginning our HRO journey, RWJBarnabas Health has embraced the role of technology in improving care delivery. By utilizing advanced tools for data collection, real-time feedback, and predictive analytics, we are able to make informed decisions that directly benefit patient care. These technological innovations are central to our overarching goal of achieving zero patient harm while enhancing clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.

In our healthcare system, we have implemented prescriptive plans for our nursing, patient experience department, and physician teams. These plans are designed to improve key metrics, such as healthcare consumer assessment of healthcare providers and systems (HCAHPS) scores, and to enhance quality measures across the organization. Our focus extends beyond clinical performance, encompassing all areas of patient care, including support staff and ancillary departments.

By fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous learning, we are building a system where technology and human connection work together to provide the highest standard of care.

The executive leadership team plays a crucial role in this process, ensuring that our goals and values are communicated consistently throughout the system. The shared understanding of not only the “what” but also the “why” behind our initiatives helps foster a collaborative culture where everyone, from physicians to support staff, works together to improve patient outcomes and safety.

A key element of our success is the integration of real-time data collection tools that allow us to track feedback from patients and staff. These tools provide valuable insights into how we are performing and where we need to improve. For example, our rounding tool allows care teams to gather immediate feedback on patient experiences, offering the opportunity to address concerns as they arise.

By analyzing the data gathered through these tools, we can identify best practices across the system and implement them more broadly. Additionally, the data helps us proactively detect emerging trends or risks, enabling us to immediately address potential concerns. One of the most impactful features of these tools is their ability to support real-time coaching. When patients acknowledge outstanding service from staff, these instances are highlighted, reinforcing the importance of patient-centered care and recognizing those who go above and beyond in their roles.

In addition to technological advancements, fostering personal connections between patients and care teams is essential to improving patient experiences. A crucial behavioral standard at RWJBarnabas Health is the “Commit-to-Sit” initiative, which encourages healthcare providers to sit down during patient interactions when appropriate. This simple act of sitting enables providers to engage with patients on a deeper level, helping to build trust and rapport.

Sitting down during a patient interaction fosters a more comfortable and empathetic environment where patients feel heard and valued. It is an opportunity for healthcare providers to address not only the medical needs of the patient but also the emotional and psychological concerns of both the patient and their family members. By creating an open line of communication, we can better reassure patients, mitigate their fears, and contribute to a more positive overall experience.

The “Commit-to-Sit” practice aligns with our technological efforts by complementing our digital tools to enhance the care experience. While technology allows for efficient care delivery and real-time data tracking, human connection remains a critical aspect of patient-centered care. This combination of empathy and innovation creates a holistic approach to improving patient experience and health outcomes.

RWJBarnabas Health is proud to be the first organization to achieve health equity accreditation, a recognition of our commitment to addressing the diverse needs of all our patients. One of the key ways we support health equity is by improving communication with patients with limited english proficiency or who are deaf or hard of hearing. We have invested in advanced language services, including video and phone interpretation technology, to ensure that all patients can communicate effectively with their care teams.

This technology allows us to break down language barriers and improve patient involvement in decision-making. By offering timely translation of medical documents and providing real-time interpretation services, we enable patients to fully understand their treatment options, follow-up care, and medication instructions. We have seen significant improvements in patient outcomes, as patients are better able to manage their health and make informed decisions when they have access to clear, understandable information.
